Bringing Wide-Area Subsea Monitoring to Shallow-Water Terminals

A recent bid highlighted the growing demand for practical subsea monitoring solutions at refinery offloading sites and marine terminals, where environmental sensitivity, vessel activity and critical infrastructure create unique monitoring challenges.

To address this need, Imenco Future Technologies proposed a shallow-water monitoring solution based on our Wide Area Active Monitoring (WAAM) technology. Designed for continuous monitoring of a defined area, the system supports the detection and localisation of abnormal subsea release events while providing broad coverage from a single installation. WAAM is capable of detecting small oil and gas releases and can provide 360-degree monitoring around critical infrastructure.

For terminal operators, the value lies in moving beyond periodic inspections and gaining wider situational awareness across the operational area. If an anomaly is detected, the system can provide information on its location, movement and plume characteristics, supporting faster assessment and environmental response. The technology also uses machine-learning-based analysis to establish normal site conditions and help reduce false alarms.
